Max is a 3D model I did based on a clay figure I made some time ago.
I've named this little clay piece Max after the software I use in 3D.
Time had come for him to go digital and get some textures and lighting !

Is Max more like maya or mudbox as far as modeling is concerned? I am so intrigued by your work and process. If you don't mind, would you let me know a little more about your process? Like, what exactly you use each program for? I would love to achieve results like yours but I just don't know how to get my renders to look even close to as good as yours. Also, do you do any mapping on your models?

Hi, sorry for the late reply.
Max and Maya work the same way, yes. Modelling, rendering and animation tools are "build in".
Mudbox is more like Zbrush, made for sculpting meshes in high resolution.
As for my process : I make a basemesh in 3ds max, then import it in mudbox for sculpting details, then take it back in 3ds max to render it with displacement maps.
After arranging UVs for mapping in 3ds max, I paint textures "by hand" (I mean, with no use of photos) in mudbox, wich has the some really amazing functions for that, very intuitive and well made.
Render is done with mental ray, wich comes build in 3ds max since a few years now.

Here, I hope it answers some of your questions. As you can see, it's a quite usual way to work nowadays, I mean, almost every 3d model is done this way.
Some may use zbrush for sculpting, maya for basemeshes and rendering, blender is quite good too (and totally free), but it's more a matter of feeling.

Wow man I really like your work! Do you do the hair in 3ds Max? I am a student right now and I have only used maya and mudbox and I have found hair is very tough.

Indeed, I do the hair with 3ds max, using the build in modifier hair and fur.
Hair render is done with mental ray, using the mrprim system with the shader P_hair tk.
It takes quite some time to get used to making hair in 3ds max, but with some patience and a lot of tests, you can achieve very convincing results !
